The Catholic Church's PR Campaign
Atrios and the progressive Roger Aisles are exactly right.
Some Catholic clergy are calling on Kerry to be refused holy communion because he is pro-choice.
But is it really because he is a Democrat?
The Catholic Church is as anti-Death Penalty as it is Anti-Choice (my website, my terminology) yet I don't recall the eucharist being denied to politicians in the United States on the former basis.
Likewise, let us consider a few Republican pro-choice politicians that are apparently able to obtain holy communion without a problem...
* Tom Ridge
* Rudolf Guiliani
* Arnold Schwarzenegger
* George Pataki
Of course, the Catholic Church is not exactly awash in good publicity the last couple of years. But nonetheless it appears that some members of the clergy believe that the sin of secularism is a much bigger problem demanding immediate action compared to sin of pederasty.
