Say Hello to Our Pinochet "Lite" - Style Detention System From the report of the International Red Cross (PDF file) we find interrogation methods that remind us of the methods of a solid South American Despot, for those prisoners rounded up for intelligence purposes (or allegedly so):
"methods of physical and psychological coercion used by the interrogators appeared to be part of the standard operating procedures by military intelligence personnel to obtain confessions and extract information. Several military intelligence officers confirmed to ICRC that it was part of the military intelligence process to hold a person deprived of his liberty naked in a completely dark and empty cell for a prolonged period to use inhumane and degrading treatment, including physical and psychological coercion, against persons deprived of their liberty to secure their cooperation."
The types of coercion used are threats of: -- reprisals against family members, -- imminent execution or transfer to Guantanamo -- Execution (sometimes actually mocked) -- Being sent to Guantanomo Actually -- being paraded around naked, -- being photographed in humiliating positions (Sound familiar? The Pictures were not just part of sick momentos they were part of the process -- likely suggeted by Military Intelligence, or Contractors) -- Being chained up naked with women's underwear over the head (over several days for hours at a time -- And the timeless classic, having one's face pressed into the ground under the pressure of a jackboot. This was a report that covered the period well-before the incidents photographed at Abu Ghraib, and throughout the nation. This was systemic abuse and torture, not the actions of a few bad apples.
